OBITUARY – Sabra Mae Wellington
Sabra Mae Wellington (fondly referred to as “Sadie”) was born March 12, 1924 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late George Henry Arnold and Lillian Perry Arnold. She had five siblings: Margaret, Hanson, Louise, Ashton, and James. She departed this life to go home to the Lord on October 3, 2018. She was 94 years old.
When she was a young child, her father moved the family to Los Angeles where he worked as a chauffeur, often transporting movie stars & celebrities. The family eventually moved back to Indiana.
She attended Crispus Attucks high school in Indianapolis, studying to be a dietician. She loved to cook and you could always be guaranteed a home cooked meal. She worked at Trumbull County Nursing Home in Brookfield, Ohio for about 25 years.
She met the love of her life, Alphonzia, and married in January 7, 1945 at the age of 21. They settled in McDonald, Ohio and were married for 42 years. Their union resulted in six beautiful children, Sandra, Sylvia, Alphonzia, Jr, Anthony, Sherri and Shawna. She was a consummate home maker. Her home was her castle and her family love was abundant.
Sabra loved the Lord and was active in her church, Centenary United Methodist in Youngstown, Ohio ,where she was a dedicated volunteer for many church events. After the death of her husband, her son, Alphonzia , was concerned that she would lose her vitality for life and asked her to come live with his family where she helped with taking care of five of her eight grandchildren. When she relocated to Cherry Hill, NJ, she joined her new home church, Asbury United Methodist ,at that time, located in Pennsauken, NJ.
Sabra often had a big smile on her face and genuinely enjoyed people. She would often boast about how she was keeping her mind active and felt that watching one of her favorite TV shows, “Jeopardy” helped to keep her mind sharp. She loved sports, especially her Eagles, and as a sports enthusiast could be found watching basketball, baseball and even golf all year round. To stay physically active, she enjoyed bowling and dancing. She served as secretary for the Sociable Seniors organization.
She is survived by her daughters, Sherri Martin, Shawna Hendree and son-in-laws Aaron Martin, Pete Hendree, Jerome Douglas and Paul Miller.
