Obituary of Marilyn Hutchinson
Marilyn Shivers Brownell Hutchinson, on April 1, 2018 of Hi-Nella, age 67. Loving wife of Donald, devoted mother of Laura White (Peter), Marie Elcin (Erkan), and Holly Hartline (Greg). Proud grandmother of Jonathan, Peter, Matthew, Zillah, James, Scott and Owen. Also survived by her parents, John H. and Marietta S. Brownell, Sr., brother John Jr. (Patte) and nieces, Katrina and Stephanie. Marilyn was a dedicated educator. She studied in Spain for a year while completing her Bachelor’s Degree at Douglas College and began her career teaching bilingual 1st grade in New Brunswick. After raising 3 daughters, and working for her father at Album House, she re-entered the profession teaching preschool at the Anita Metzger ITA School in Haddonfield. She retired after 25 years as a Spanish and ESL teacher at Triton Regional HS in the Black Horse Pike Regional School District, where she also was the Adult Evening Education Coordinator. Marilyn was active in many community organizations. She earned the Curved Bar in Girl Scouts, was the Senior State President of NJ CAR, and Chaplain of the Haddonfield DAR chapter. Marilyn was the Past Master of Haddon Grange #38 and the State Chaplain of the NJ State Grange. She was the organist for the Athene Chapter 201, Order of the Eastern Star, and Chaplain of the Eastern Square Wheelers Chapter 11 of the NCT Masonic Camping Club. She served Grace Episcopal Church in Merchantville as a Sunday school teacher and church secretary. Marilyn was also a prolific artist, talented with singing, watercolor, paper crafts, sewing, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and gardening. She sang in the Kirkpatrick Choir of Douglas College, her church choir, the South Jersey Chorale, and at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC for the national convention. She taught smocking at the Little Shop in Haddonfield, cut silhouettes for Revolutionary War reenactments (2nd NJ Regiment Laurie Company and the 5th PA Regiment), and made paper and crocheted jewelry. She was involved most recently with the Jefferson/Kennedy Knitting and Crochet Club making items for various charities. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Requiem Eucharist on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Grace Episcopal Church, 7 E. Maple Ave., Merchantville, NJ 08109. Visitation at 9:30AM; Grange and Eastern Star services at 10:30 immediately followed by Eucharist at 11:00. Luncheon to follow at Merchantville Masonic Lodge, 6926 Park Ave., Pennsauken, NJ 08109.
