Obituary of John Edward Mahoney

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Mahoney (Jack), age 56, died June 11 following an accident on the Beckett Street Pier in Camden NJ. Married for 28 years to his beloved wife Jean (nee Beardsworth) they shared a small farm in Sicklerville NJ, raising horses and tending to many other pets as well. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Blackwood NJ, he graduated from Camden County Vocational High School in 1974 and shortly thereafter began his long career on the Delaware River docks. Jack had been a proud member of the International Longshoreman'sUnion, Local 1242 for the last 35 years. Large in stature, 6 foot 8, and genuine in character, he was honest, hardworking and a straight shooter. While he may have appeared physically formidable, he always had a tender spot for animals. He loved to sit outside the horse barn at his farm in his big camp chair and watch the horses in the field with a Heineken in one hand and the Daily Racing Form in the other. His binoculars at his side so he could watch the deer and birds that frequented the farm. He took great pride in the thrill of seeing Jean's and his first homebred horse, Simply Wicked, run her first race at Parx Race Track. Jack was an awesome cook and grill master who relished making delicious dishes for his wife, their friends and family. He loved most sports; horse racing and football were his favorites, especially when a wager was involved. Jack enjoyed making stained glass lamps and light catchers for family and friends. Jack had requested that when his time came, he would want his friends and family to gather and share special memories and a drink in his honor. A memorial event to do so is in the planning. Jack is survived by his beloved wife Jean (nee Beardsworth), his parents, John and Claire (nee Fritz) inBlackwoodNJ, brothers Michael and Chuck (Chuck Lezenby) and sisters Patricia McLeod and Maureen Wilson (Rick), and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
