Elmer T. Devenney Jr., on June 9, 2013, of Atco, age 82. Survived by his loving wife Doris (nee Burkhart), devoted father of Diane J, Cynthia L. Wakeley, Ken and the late Jeffrey P. Proud grandfather of Coleen, Jennifer, Charles, Tabatha, Gary, Matt, Paul, Dawn and Stephanie, fourteen great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Also survived by his sisters Julia St. Maur and Helen Guetherman. Elmer was the son of the late Elmer T. Devenny Sr., and Julia (nee Kolb) Devenney. He was a student at St. Lawrence Catholic School and served as an alter boy at the St. Lawrence Church. He was a 1949 graduate of Lower Camden County Regional High School. In August of 1949 he helped form the Antler Gun Club Inc., and was elected president and captain. In October of 1951 he married his school-time sweetheart Doris Burkhart. In October of 1951 Elmer was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to radio school at Camp Chaffe, AK, and then went on to serve in the Korean War where he was attached to the Ethiopian Battalion. After honorary discharge from the army he was employed with the Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Lines railroad (later known as Conrail) for 37 years, controlling movement of train traffic. Elmer loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, golfing and gardening. In 1972 he received the Jackson & Perkins "Rose Research Test Panel" award for participation in growing the research test roses. He was a lifetime member and supporter of the N.R.A. and the second amendment. He was also a member of the Waterford Township Republican Club and served 14 years with the Environmental Commission of Waterford Township. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a viewing on Saturday between 8:30 and 9:45 AM at the Danks-Hinski Funeral Home, 125 N. White Horse Pike at South Ave., Lindenwold, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, St. Lawrence Campus. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Berlin. In lieu of flowers donations in his honor may be made to the Waterford Twp. E.M. S., 192 A Ave., Atco, NJ 08004. Condolences may be offered at www.dankshinskifuneralhome.com.
