Obituary of Pearl W. Rhodes

Please share a memory of Pearl to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Pearl Wynsome Rhodes was born on March 16, 1939 in Ginger Hill, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica.  She is the fifth child for her parents, mother, Annie Blackwood-Rhodes and father, Alfred Rhodes. She was affectionately called ‘Curla’ and, ‘Aunt Pearl’ by her sons: Cecil Fray, Tedford Hepburn (deceased), Norton Hepburn and daughter, Laurel Hepburn.   She watched over them to the best of her ability with the protective eye of a mother. She doted on her grandchildren, held them tight and taught them when they made mistakes. Grandchildren Damian, Zanialee, Theodore (deceased), Cassius, Christa-Lee, Shakaye and Norton; her five great grands Damian Jr, Xanado, Savannah, Xavier and Ariella all shared many fond memories of her.  Her three elder brothers are all deceased, and she leaves behind a sister, many nephews, nieces and other relatives globally.

We remember in love she was skilled in dress and craft making.  She enjoyed cooking and reading. She liked pets and travel to explore new places.  She loved to garden all around the home.  She would welcome and host with a maternal affection many visitors traveling from abroad some of whom were Mormons.  She was an au pair for children sharing her time between work and home.  She took great pride in her work and quickly became a pinnacle of support and confidante for her clients. She doted on the very children she cared for like her own family. Pearl Rhodes was a proud Christian. She would pray, read the bible, meditate and sing in devotion.  She would teach us about Bible in stories and discussion.

She provided a sterling example for her children and raised them in any way she could.  During her later years she was worried for her family and expressed she wished the best for them. She was under the care of her eldest son Cecil Fray who devoted his best efforts to care for her from her working years to her last moments in his arms. Her later years were challenged with Dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as she was in and out from hospital and home.  She was consoled by family and friends when she was able to remember. She tried to hold on but at the age of 83 it would seem to us she lost the battle here on earth, but she passed on to glory to our Lord who called her home to rest leaving behind sickness and  pain.  She is missed dearly by all who knew her best. We may recall her many endearing qualities now that she transitioned. Those very precious memories are what we have left to reflect upon.  We pray her soul will rest in peace with our father God, Jehovah.

Happy memories that outweigh the bad will linger in our hearts forever because of Pearl Rhodes. We are encouraged and uplifted by these words of promise: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed for his compassions never fail…  They are new every morning.”  (Lamentations 3:22-23)
