The first time I met Harry was at Rutgers when he came to a reading with Darcy. I got a few words out of him, but not many. In the years I knew him, this was usually the case. Yet his silence wasn’t the brooding sullen kind that I was used to from the men I knew growing up. There was a gentle calmness to Harry’s presence that he didn’t need to communicate in words. My fondest memory of him was having pizza with him in Paris. Now, as you all probably know, Harry hated Paris. I remember asking him what he thought of Paris, and he said something to the effect of “I don’t like it. I like London. But the pizza’s good.” This just reaffirmed what I already knew about him, that he was endearingly and unapologetically himself. I remember thinking, even though I didn’t meet the man until I was in my thirties, I want to be Harry Cummings when I grow up.

Brian Love your tribute. Another Harry-ism about his least-favorite City: "Even if they paid me $10,000, I wouldn't piss from the Eiffel Tower on Paris." Though he'd grudgingly admit that he loved the museums, cemeteries, art. His Paris anger started when rowdies walking toward us took up the whole sidewalk and he stepped aside, off the curb, hurting his ankle. Then four grim days in our hotel room, his leg ice packed. The fab food in the 1st class Chunnel train to London helped. DC

It was a pleasure to see the wonderful art Harry did over the years. The little chair in the photo is one of his creations. He was a fine man and a marvelously inventive artist. It was a pleasure to know him and to have the chance to collect some of his art. Barbara and David Daniels

Harry and Darcy were dear friends of ours when we were first married and lived in Cheery Hill, NJ. Through the years we stayed in touch even though we moved away. Harry was a quiet, gentle soul who would do anything for you in the name of friendship. We will miss Harry's presence , but will remember him with joy and laughter always. Michael and Elaine Pew

Thanks Elaine, its been many years since I have seen you both. I remember your visits and spending time at your home in Cherry Hill and your visits at our home. He really would do anything to help a friend and even a stranger. That I shall always remember. Eric

My father loved this photo of himself when he was as a kid in WW2, it was his favorite so we just want to share. My mom loved him very much as husband and father to us kids. My brother, sister, and myself will miss him as the best role model, buddy, friend and father we could ever ask for. I never heard anyone say a negative word about him. That is a tough act to follow.
